What is a Dental Crown?

At our office, a dental crown is a fixed restoration for a damaged tooth. It takes the form of a porcelain cap that fits over the damaged site, protecting and beautifying the area. This cap should then keep harmful debris (plaque, bacteria, etc.) away from the tooth’s pulp and hide prior decay or damage.

Due to the traits of dental crowns, the best candidates for them have one (or more) of the following:

  • Cavities that can’t be fixed with fillings
  • An old filling that caused tooth damage
  • Teeth eroded by bruxism (i.e., teeth grinding)
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • A tooth that just had a root canal

The Dental Crown Process

Receiving a dental crown requires two visits with Dr. Smiley. For the first appointment, he’ll “prepare” your tooth for its future restoration. He’ll deliver and place the final crown at the second session.

At the first visit, our team will prep your smile for its crown. This process removes your tooth’s present decay and files it down to make room for the cap. Next, we’ll take detailed molds or “impressions” of the prepped tooth and send them to a dental lab. Workers will use these molds to make your final restoration, crafting it over a period of weeks. You’ll wear a temporary crown in the meantime.

You'll return for the second visit when your permanent crown arrives from the lab. At this appointment, Dr. Smiley places the final cap over your prepped tooth. The placement should be quick and painless as he makes last-minute changes to ensure the crown fits. Once he’s finished, our team will polish your grin before letting you enjoy your treatment results.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

As it happens, leaving a decayed or damaged tooth untreated will cause many problems. Only with a dental crown can you prevent those issues from cropping up. By getting one, you’ll enjoy perks like:

  • Strong Tooth Protection – Due to using high-quality porcelain, our dental crowns will protect your teeth from bacteria and other debris. You’ll then get to avoid future root canals or tooth extractions.
  • A Gorgeous Grin – Our dental crowns are tooth-colored, so they blend with your other teeth and don’t draw unwanted attention. Your peers won’t even know your tooth was damaged.
  • Versatile Care – Thanks to covering the whole tops of your teeth, dental crowns are very versatile. Patients can use them to treat cavities, chips, fractures, and more!
  • Lasting Results – A dental crown can last 15 years or more if you maintain one well. You just need to care for it by brushing, flossing, and seeing us often!
