However, it doesn\u2019t have to be; learn more about this condition, how it\u2019s diagnosed, and how it can often successfully be treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Salivary Gland Cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your salivary glands produce the saliva that helps digest\nfood; the parotid glands \u2013 the largest salivary glands \u2013 are where most salivary\ngland tumors form, though they can still appear on the smaller glands. Most of\nthese tumors are benign, but there are several different types of malignant tumors\nthat can appear as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The causes for this type of cancer are unclear. It does affect\nmales more often than females, and the risk tends to increase with age. Exposure\nto radiation also seems to make it more likely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Salivary Gland Cancer Be Diagnosed? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to its location, salivary gland cancer can often be\nfound in its early stages during routine dental appointments. Commonly, it\u2019s\nidentified as a lump on one of the glands; it can also cause persistent pain,\nchanges to the size and shape of one side of your face or neck, numbness,\nweakness, fluid draining from the ear, and trouble with opening the mouth or\nswallowing. Imaging tests such as X-rays can be used to find suspicious areas,\nand a biopsy (removing and examining affected cells) can be performed to confirm\nthe diagnosis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Checking for cancer in the mouth is often part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smileyfamilydentistry.com\/dental-checkups-cleanings.html\">routine\ncheck-up<\/a> by your dentist in Waverly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Salivary Gland Cancer Be Cured?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, finding salivary gland cancer early on gives you\na better chance of a successful treatment.
