What Happens During Dental Crown Treatment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting a dental crown is easier and less complicated than you might think. First, your dentist will numb your mouth, so you won\u2019t feel any discomfort. Then, he will take impressions of the damaged tooth, which will be sent to the dental lab to create your crown. Next, he will carefully reshape the tooth, remove the damaged portions, and prepare it for the prosthetic tooth. He will then make more impressions of the reshaped tooth, to ensure that your new crown will fit securely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, you will be given a temporary crown to protect the reshaped tooth until the final restoration is delivered from the dental lab. Typically, you\u2019ll need to wear this for about two weeks. Once the permanent crown arrives, you\u2019ll return to your dentist\u2019s office to have it cemented into place. Please note that while this is referred to as permanent, it will likely need to be replaced in about ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, be careful with your temporary crown, especially when eating and flossing. Be sure to avoid anything too sticky or crunchy, as this can cause it to come loose, as can flossing too far underneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Recovery Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, recovering from a dental crown is usually quite easy. Because your mouth is numb during the reshaping process, you won\u2019t feel more than slight pressure during this portion of the treatment. After, you may experience some sensitivity while wearing a temporary crown. If so, do your best to avoid anything too hot or cold. This should clear up once your permanent crown is attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caring for Your New Crown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once your permanent crown is attached, you can treat it just as you would a real tooth. Be sure to brush it twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss daily.  Furthermore, don\u2019t skip your preventive dental exams and cleanings, and never use it like a tool.  It is important that you understand that even though the crown itself cannot get cavities, your underlying tooth still can, so it\u2019s important to take excellent care of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
