This tried-and-true method improves the quality of your daily life by allowing you to eat and speak more like you used to while simultaneously enhancing your appearance.

In an ideal world, your dentures would last forever but the truth is that they usually need to be replaced at some point. If you’re not sure whether it’s time for a new set, continue reading for 3 indicators that yours may need to be replaced!

Sign #1: They’ve Become Loose

Your dentures are created to fit your mouth like a glove but after you suffer from tooth loss, your jawbone begins to degrade which slowly alters your facial structure. This is bad news for your restoration because it remains in place by forming a tight suction against your gums. As your mouth shape changes, your dentures are less able to form a tight enough bond to stay put. It’s possible that relining them will allow you to continue enjoying the many benefits they provide for a while. Eventually, however, you’ll need to be fitted with a brand-new set.

Sign #2: They’re Broken

It’s not uncommon for dentures to slip and fall when you take them out, especially during cleanings. When this happens, the force of the drop can fracture the artificial teeth (pontics), the gum-colored base, or both. If yours are chipped, cracked, or fractured then you need to call your dentist right away. The structure is compromised, and harmful bacteria can thrive in the broken places and cause oral problems. Even if you don’t have any natural pearly whites remaining, you could develop gum disease or decay that can penetrate your jawbone if left unaddressed.

You might feel tempted to try to fix your dentures at home with super glue or some other solution, but this can be toxic to your health and should be avoided. Instead, let your provider know that your restoration is damaged so they can take appropriate steps to assist you.

Sign #3: They Look Worn

Although your dentures are made of durable materials like porcelain or composite resin, they don’t last forever. Years of eating and drinking with them can leave them looking worn down and/or discolored. You might start to feel self-conscious about the state of your smile and avoid too many social interactions because of it. Visiting your dentist and having them replaced enhances your appearance so that you look and feel your best.

If you experience these problems with your dentures, contact your dentist right away so you can start the process of rebuilding your grin once again!

About the Author

Dr. Jonathan Smiley enjoys helping people of all ages improve their lives by enhancing their oral health.
